Who else made an unearthly squeal?

Stabrina November 27, 2018 6:47 pm

When was the last time something interesting and plot related occurred?

    Sachiko December 4, 2018 3:23 pm

This is the plot. Sorry if you can't understand it but that's not the author's fault. Also, read above.

? Having no plot is the plot?

anyway right now the “plot” is rambling fluff with no substance. Every chapter is ‘cute’ but there’s no drama, intrigue, or complexity. Just a bunch of background stuff that should have been explained in the first twenty chapters.

The start was solid but now that everyone LOVES the mc, it’s gotten so boring. Like, she has no goals. Obviously her dad won’t kill her anymore so she’s just there looking cute and being fawned and protected. B o r i n g. when will she actually act like a smart grown woman or use her past life knowledge to do... anything??

Anyway, I believe this is all due to the author’s bad writing x”D. I’m holding on for my love of Assisi but now even he is starting to feel like a one dimensional stock character true “pretty face protector with the terrible past who is really sweet once you get to know him”. the mc is totally useless and becoming very Mary Sue-y “everyone loves me and I can do no wrong also I have magic blood and I’m super special”. I just want a time skip to when she does something worthy of an ‘MC’. I want the author to give me something— anything to show me that these characters aren’t falling into bland stereotypes when the start was so good!

But hey, that’s just the opinion of someone who “doesn’t understand it” I suppose

In this manwha, he did go there wanting sex so the sleep thing was more dubious in my mind.
(I will keep reading and enjoying this manga but not without acknowledging problematic themes that arise.)

I think the biggest issues lie in the “assault is okay since it’s fiction” thought.

The things we read and see influence us and our culture whether we want it to or not. I personally believe that while yaoi and assault are very much, sadly, interconnected, there are healthy ways to depict it. By not romanticizing and fetishizing it.

Sure it’s ‘sexy’ but imagine some stupid teenage boy reading any ecchi/hentai manga where the girl is legitimately saying no, crying and begging (like many ukes) and the dude pounds into her regardless eventually turning that no into a yes. Imagine that dumb, easily influenced kid reading hundreds of similar echi comics for years and eventually thinking “even if she says no, i can turn it into a yes.” Or “no actually means yes”. Or “because I love her it’s not rape.” Or “because I’ve loved her for so long and was nice to her I’m entitled to her body.”

These concepts are super prevalent tropes in yaoi and most media which is very unhealthy for the cultures we live in. rapists don’t get these concepts out of the blue. But it’s a very common thought. I don’t believe anyone is born to be a rapist and parents don’t usually teach their kids to rape. But rape happens and we need to acknowledge the factors that may cause it. (Yaoi fanbase is predominately women who are less likely to rape but it’s the concepts that we read and are fine with that’s worrying)

I’m not saying to not depict it. I’m saying we need to acknowledge that fiction does impact reality to some extent. (Ex. Think about how Harry Potter has affected the whole world)

If people are finally acknowledging the romanticization of dubious consent, rape, and assault, in your favorite yaois and that upsets you, maybe you need to sit back and wonder why. It’s good for some people to read the comments and realize “this isn’t acceptable behavior irl”.

No ones telling you to hate the comics you love but maybe look at things with more awareness and understand that there are just some things that shouldn’t be glorified.

Tl;dr: fiction/stories/movies affects the world around us. You can like what you like but let’s be real and stop glorifying rape and assault in fiction.

    Zealot_crazer November 26, 2018 12:12 pm

You're absolutely right. Any form of narrative affects the readers consciously or subconsciously though they may not acknowledge it. No one's asking for the content to not have rape but at least in acknowledging that it's rape and not love, it makes so much difference. I remember reading a novel where the female protagonist says that what he is doing to her is because of his possessiveness, and THAT I believe really is horrible. Nothing excuses the act of sexual violence. It influences women to believe that the man being pushy is an indication of his love when it really is not. It's just a show of power. He shouldn't treat you like you're a fragile piece of china either. He shouldn't treat you like you're his property but as an equal in the relationship. That is why I disagree with you when you say this will influence the men to rape and believe it's an act of love. As you said, the target base is women and it is therefore them who needs to understand that sexual violence does not in any have love in it but it's an act of domination and power.

    Gemiie November 26, 2018 1:47 pm

Rapists have always been among us, but to tell the author to be conscious about what is placed in her manhwa is a bit much. When you take a drawing and make it your reality, it isnt influencing, you to do the wrong thing, you are doing the wrong thing because you want to.

    Stabrina November 27, 2018 6:17 pm

Just to clarify I am not saying that reading works that glorify rape are the single cause for rape in the world. (Also I’m talking about the themes of romanticized rape ((and lets add abuse like 50 shades of gray)) in fiction and not just yaoi.) like, with 50 shades of gray I have had way too many friends glorify Mr. gray as sexy and thinking his actions were completely acceptable. Which may make them think that those sorts of things are okay to be done to them.

There are definitely terrible people who know it is wrong and do it anyway. But I’ve heard and seen stories of guys who (at least acted) like they sincerely thought that the girl was saying no because she was shy.

Thankfully in this day and age everyone should be more aware that abusive/possessive actions shouldn’t be construed as romantic and that no means no.

Unfortunately we still have people in power that will let off rapists because they’re “model students who made a mistake” and not care about the damage done to the victim. Or just victim blame. (Which, happens in fiction a lot. I’ve lost count of the attacker saying it’s the victim’s fault for being so “defenseless/lewd/dense” etc.)

    Additional thought:
I really hope that women reading these are not ever influenced into thinking that acts of sexual violence (whether you are dating the person or not) is ever okay! No means no and consent should always be explicitly given!

I don’t think that would ever be a common thought but if there is even one of you thinking that and reading this I hope you really really reconsider the relationship!

Rape isnt a joke, we all know that, but it isnt rape unless someone feels that they have been. So it may seem like the action but in 50 Shades of Grey, she didnt find it to be that, same for the guy in this manhwa. Dont just say its assault just to say it, some people are into certain things. But if for any reason you feel raped, vocalize that

I think this is where we differ and that’s fine. I just think that not all people are completely aware of what harmful/toxic behavior looks like. I’m not the say all end all in the discussion of consent. But yo, if people are into that, then that’s already, in a way, consent given. But usuuuually characters and people aren’t really into that— unless they want to spice up their sex life? Idk.

But again, just want to spread awareness so people can decide whether or not they’re in a situation that they realize is not for them but had been groomed into thinking is fine.

I know the author says they’re middle schoolers. But with how they’re drawn and act I’m just going to think of them as 18 year olds. It is canon now.

Yeah, no - I wasn't nearly as zen as Masaki. Not even close.
It was twin boys at Hikari's age, but still. No zen. Not at all.
So I can kind of relate and go "Fuaaa" as well, for it's got so many healing properties (▰˘◡˘▰)

“Please take care of my daughter”

He proceeds to treat her like garbage, cause her to have a mental breakdown, throws her away the “fated bitch” comes, rape her (she said no and he coerced her into it so a dubious yes is still rape), ruin her health to the point of a miscarriage, kills her father and then kills her.

He’s a watching trash fire that needs to be ‘taken care of’.
