i personally believe that sosuke IS in love with kippei. i don't think he just settled for him because he couldn't be with his best friend. imo the feelings sosuke had towards his friend were less love and more feelings left over from lack of closure? (perhaps in the beginning it really was love but i don't think that is true for the majority of the story)
his friend was able to brush off the whole thing as an accident and move on with girls, but sosuke had to face the fact that it was a turning point for him and that he's actually gay. he couldn't just close the book and be done with it like his friend
he also probably has angst toward his friend because of the fact that he was able to have a successful career, have a "normal" relationship and even get married, whereas sosuke is struggling with his own issues and had a lot of things given to him. it contributes to this feeling that his friend is getting farther away from him because he can function normally in life, whereas sosuke is held back by his addiction and sexuality
