This is the best BWAT story and one of my favorite BLs ever. It’s hard to describe how this casts its own sort of mania over me. It’s perfect in every way and accomplishes everything it seeks to accomplish. The toxicity is painfully beautiful and the plot was perfectly paced and executed. All the side plots and characters were resolved and it’s the most complete story in terms of story telling which is shockingly rare.
The most precious thing about Mania is the main romance. I loved that we get to see how they were feeling and thinking. It avoids tropes of prolonged misunderstandings, SA and an unbalanced dynamic. Their desperation for each other and their chemistry, Urgh it makes my heart clench at the beauty. I don’t think there are many other BLs that manages to tell such a magnetic relationship as Munhyeok and YeonJin. I love that scene where Yeon Jin looks so desperately at his wife talking about how Mun Hyeok tied his tie for him. That single panel kills me.
The ending too was just so good. Meeting after 8 years, time eating and making all of Yeonjins insecurities and obsession worse. How they are clearly flawed but the ray of happiness they cast on each other and how they fight for it. It’s just perfect.
I adore this work and consider it one of the best of the bests. Light years better than 90% of other BLs.
I love love love this story though. It’s funny, so moving and does a great job of exploring how humans would react when the world was ending. I think those parts along with the exploration our very human fears that constantly make life a struggle with yourself and the inability to move on to. That sort of human pain that we all experience and how it would play in this situation, so well done.
Ritsu is a damn hoe and everything he says is out a of a cheaters handbook. He is a very real and fascinating character. I really wish I could trust him and it grinds my gears that removing temptation was the route he went with, living alone in the mountains?? Sure one year penance is great and all but fundamentally as a person, he really has to examine why he cheated, the disregard of someone who loved him dearly is so painful to read. He is extremely fine though.
The MC is interesting too. he was a human with faults. When he thought he was special I just went, oh honey… I think most of us could relate to him. I wanted to shake him so many times. He’s been hung up on this guy for years. Heartbreaking.
The 16yo. He’s funny af and so accurately a teenager. Annoying, sweet, so naive, selfish and horny. The whole him having supernatural powers arc was hilarious.
And finally Hashimoto (MCs BFF) is the goat. Him being there for the MC was so sweet and touching. The text he sent to Ritsu just going “no” love it. But really, I would keep the MC miles away from ML if I was their friend.
I love this!! It’s perfect in ways I’ve always wanted. Very understated, the story telling is so well done and all the characters have a ton of actual character. I love the MC, I totally understand why he would throw the watch in the water. It makes sense with his character. My interpretation is that he’s frustrated, lonely and this simmering attraction that he can’t name makes him even more irritable.
The act of giving him the watch so casually makes him angry because he can’t define the boundaries of their relationship. He can’t read too much into it and he also can’t tell if it means something or not. His frustration bleeds into his actions. He can’t seem to stop replying, stop meeting him and can’t cut him out of his life.

Urgh. I am weak for the art. Love love the character designs. Unfortunately the writing is not the best. I wonder why the author chose to ask big philosophical questions like what would be the purpose a creature transported into modern day world where labour and life is so different, how will he find meaning and the complicated situation of someone being created by another person and their meeting. That dynamic is so interesting. They did try with the whole he was just born, only met the MC, all the firsts with him situation but I don’t think the real question of who the person actually is beyond what the MC wills him to be is ever answered.
The power dynamic is skewed in favour of the MC. Other isekai stuff usually don’t not suffer from the same problems because it’s the MC going into the story. The characters are already people with their own personalities.
