Everyone’s hating on of Duke of Haiyan and yes he’s not my favorite but I also don’t think he’s a bad guy. I think he genuinely does care for Shin but is bad at expressing it (although he thinks he’s good at expressing and protecting shin) he looked up the to King only to see him kill all of innocent children and he could do nothing but watch and right after he witnessed their deaths his father immediately told him that he would need to become king and save people like them. Although that could’ve been motivation, it was done in a very manipulative way. His child just witnessed murder and instead of consoling him he just pushed on his ambitions onto his child. So the duke grew up remembering how helpless he was when it came to those children’s deaths and being manipulated into thinking he was rj only one that could save the kingdom. Once he met Shin and heard about his past as the king’s Child he took pity on him and immediately assumed Wolfgang was also treating Shin in a disgraceful way since Wolfgang is the direct child of the previous King. He wanted to become King and once Shin tricked him into thinking he’s treated unfairly (not even having time for himself in 10 years) his ambition to take over Wolfgang became stronger. His savior complex also got bigger. He’s not trying to take over the kingdom of Goldenleonard to become a tyrant but to save the people bc he genuinely thinks they’re in trouble, he’s doing it out of good Will but due to his terrible father and upbringing he has a twisted mentality
