I think the last thing we see of him being the dead look in his eyes is probably just the indication that this is and will forever be his life and what he's resigned himself to :( he's going to keeper going on this path that keeps him from being miserable bit ultimately stifles Jim and takes away his chance at true happiness and it's a sacrifice he's willing to make
