The reason this debate keeps happening is because BL, like any genre, has a complicated relationship with dark themes. Some readers see grape in stories and immediately think it’s romanticizing abuse, especially when it’s used as a cheap way to force ‘romance’ between characters. Others argue it’s just fiction, and exploring messed-up scenarios doesn’t equal endorsing them. Both sides have valid points, but instead of discussing it constructively, people end up attacking each other.
What’s weird is the hostility toward people who don’t like the trope. Disliking grape plots doesn’t make someone ‘too sensitive’ or ‘a moralizing hypocrite’ it just means they want better storytelling or don’t enjoy that kind of content. At the same time, readers who ddo engage with dark fiction shouldn’t be accused of ‘supporting rape.’ Fiction is complex, and everyone consumes it differently.
The real issue isn’t the trope itself, it’s how it’s written. If it’s handled with depth (like exploring trauma or consequences), fine. But if it’s just shock value or lazy drama, of course people will criticize it. Instead of fighting over who’s ‘right,’ maybe we should push for more nuanced discussions—and better writing

Also the the classic ‘illegal site’ deflection, because apparently, reading a pirated copy magically erases your right to critique bad writing.
Newsflash: Whether you pay for BL or read it free, romanticized grape is still a tired, harmful trope. If the only counterargument is ‘b-but piracy!!!’ then maybe the real issue isn’t morality… it’s the lack of a real defense for lazy storytelling.
Stay mad, I guess

Notice how you keep dodging the ‘illegal site’ point? That’s because you know it’s a bad argument. If reading pirated BL truly made criticism invalid, then:
- Your own comments would be meaningless too (since you’re here on the same site).
- No one could critique anything unless they paid for it (which even you don’t actually believe).
You dropped that talking point because you realized it backfires on YOU. The truth?**
- Piracy ≠ moral high ground, but it also doesn’t silence valid critiques.
- The real issue isn’t HOW people read, it’s WHY rape tropes keep getting criticized (because they’re often written poorly).

Your first/Og comment is
"Idk why y’all complaining, acting like it’s new. Like you’re here reading Yaoi on an “illegal” website..tryna preach about morals? Quite hypocritical if you ask me. Neways if you hate it just take it up with the author/artist. If not just leave. no need to bring up discussions that obviously only caters to your tastes. Let people read what they want to read smh ╮( ̄_ ̄)╭"
Your entire argument collapses under basic scrutiny:
1 ‘You read illegally, so shut up’
→ Then why are you commenting here too? By your logic, your opinion is just as ‘invalid.’
→ Piracy doesn’t magically erase critiques—it’s a cheap deflection, not a real argument.
2 Take it up with the author or leave’
→ You could’ve ‘left’ this discussion instead of replying, yet here you are. Rules for thee but not for others?
3 ‘Discussions should cater to everyone’s tastes’
→ Then why attack people for having different tastes or critiques? You’re literally demanding silence to ‘let people read’… while silencing others.
The hypocrisy is staggering.
- You want no criticism of tropes you like, but free rein to criticize critics.
- You cry 'moral preaching’ but moralize about how others should engage.
- You use the same ‘illegal’ site while acting superior to those who do.
Truth is: Discussions about tropes aren’t about ‘tastes’—they’re about holding stories to higher standards. If that threatens you, maybe ask yourself why?

Right?? The mental hoops they jump through to defend this shit is wild. Like, we’re just ‘maybe don’t romanticize grape?’ and suddenly we’re the problem? The fragility is unreal.
Appreciate you being sane in this mess though! Some of us actually care about the genre improving instead of making excuses for garbage tropes.

Yeah, just let us dislike something in peace lmao, it's not like we're attacking authors or artists.
To be honest, I'll deal with some "questionable" plots (and you can see that on my profile), but it's usually the ones that are so unserious and have not nuance. I just turn off my brain and just read the last chapter to see how it ended lmao
But I always have a limit, and that's when authors use the tropes for shocking value and/or to try and "deepen" their mid story. I also heavily disliked when the scenes are too graphic (that's one of the reasons I don't like Harass"s works) .
I haven't read much BL manhwas lately because of this.

THIS.
It’s about wanting better storytelling. Like you said, some tropes are so overdone/exploitative that they just feel lazy or shock-value edgy. And when it’s graphic for no reason? Hard pass.
I’ll still read dark BL if it’s handled with care (actual consequences, character depth, etc.), but so many just use grape as a cheap shortcut to ‘angst’ or ‘romance.’ No thanks.
Glad I’m not the only one taking breaks from BL manhwas over this. Maybe if enough readers push back, authors will finally move past these tired tropes.
And Same lol, sometimes I just head empty and roll with it. But when it's just shock value or lazy writing? Nah, I'm out. (≧∀≦)

Yeah!
I hope they better their stories.
For me to turn my brain off the story should be short because I can handle it, like one hour or less of mediocrity it's fine. That's why I usually prefer mangas. I follow a lot of manhwas, but I tend to drops them once it's establish that they're not my cup of tea.
Now, when it's a long one I just can't deal with it. That's why I disliked Missing Love, gorgeous art for a mid story.
I think Solo for two does a much better job at handling heavy, complex and toxic topics. Into the rose garden is another dark one I liked, although I read the novel and it was we'll written, so I really enjoyed it!

Disgusting. You need to tell your parents what you're doing with your time. Go and show them what you're reading."
My respond to your comment "
Oh nooo, you’re right, let me go confess to my parents that I… read fiction and left a comment. The scandal!
Are you okay??(づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ Like who hurt you? Was it an omega? Was it this omega? Σ( ̄□ ̄||)

Ok that's enough ebil, he ends up with our puppy esper. c:

Mia (mc) said she doesn't want to go to the blind date because she "never met them before" but she's okay with marrying a human (known to literally kidnap mermaids and is dangerous to them?? And she said "BUUT! You never know until you meet him in person"?? But same with the blind date? You never know cuz you haven't met them (The reason she wants to be with a human cuz of her fantasy of being human). I'm already in chapter 2 and I dropped this cuz of her. I love the drawing but rn she's triggering me.. ..

Tbh, I feel so bad for mc. I don't like the dad at all cuz ofc he doesn't care about her (not until she clinged to him so much yearning for affection) and I don't like the mom aswell. When there was bad rumours(Like mc was abandoned) about mc, the dad and mom (everyone I think) didn't DO anything to fix the problem... Ik the mom visits mc most of the time, but she knows how sad MC's life is but she's all smiles.. I'm at chapter 20 now btw, but I'm gonna reread this cuz I dropped this for so long now.

This is a crazy take indeed, I just hated how her own mom didn't really do anything when mc was literally treated as "abandoned", like she's still all smiles and loving lovely with her husband aka the dad of mc. I feel like the mom loves her husband MORE than her own daughter. Granted, she did took care of her daughter, but she wasn't there when mc was being treated as nothing and she didn't do anything even when her OWN husband treated her badly. So I hate both the mom and dad.

*the mom took care of mc sometimes. And it just irks me when mc just looks at her mom being so lovely dovey with her asshole of a husband (he's an asshole cuz he treats mc shit when she was just born). I can't just think of the mom as any better than the dad. She's to busy smiling for the man who treats their daughter bad than to take care of her daughter's reputation. I feel super super bad, and mc is such a kind hearted soul that she still clings to these bad parents. I love mc so much

I can see that point of view, fair enough. I mean, there was a minor incident where they claim she reprimanded him for calling her "useless" and you see him apologizing, but that is definitely more towards his mother than his daughter. But I believe he was attempting to keep his distance because he did not want her to become a weakness. Like the butlerette mentioned, "she could serve as his weakness" or whatever. BUT fair enough
Mc is so good at swords but she looks petite and small.. No muscle at all.. Ain't that just wonderful..
