I think the emperor loved Yeo Dam before. We saw from "Jin Ha" that he doesn't have any grasp about the normal human relationship. Let alone the human interaction. He used to be picky and all but Yeo Dam was able to "educate" him in this present life. Before, they met when they were both old if I'm not mistaken. Meaning, he's that "Jin Ha" that Yeo Dam didn't educate yet. He doesn't know how to understand others. He doesn't know how relationship and emotions work in general. It was mentioned that they're different from normal humans so it must mean that the term "hobby" has a different meaning for them than our normal interpretation of it. Yeo Dam mentioned that he's letting go of his feelings before the emperor fell into coma. Maybe the emperor was scared about that fact and he pretended to be in the brink of death so Yeo Dam won't leave him but he didn't think that Yeo Dam will actually sacrifice his life for him. It's crazy but well, it can be his own way of showing affection. It's not good. It's dark and twisted but then again, it seems like he doesn't have any knowledge about it. The mere fact that he did unspeakable things to his own kids before shows that he doesn't know how relationship works. Let alone emotions.
