I think it was mostly the high class or spillers that abused them. But it also seemed like everyone knew about the abuse going on and didn’t care cause it benefited them
I don't think all knew, because the people in Alto's village just believed that Kanagi were God's protectors. Scared of them, thinking it weird. And things like that.
I assumed they were talking about the past since their comment mentioned about people “coming” to the island. Cause in present time, no one openly comes and goes from the island except for those researchers. Cause if they were talking about the past, the islanders definitely knew outright or it was like an open secret. If they’re talking about present day then yes, almost no one knows about their awful past except for the top people. I would even say the church (whatever that is) doesn’t even know the full truth since they’ve leaned so far into the religious beliefs.
