Even though the plot could have thicken and carried on, I've got to say that this is one of the best piece that I've ever read. I honestly wanted more but was satisfied that the story could head to many different possibilities that the reader can imagine.
In other words it allows the readers to imagine their own continuation/ending the way they think it should be. It's practically a story portrait as a blank canvas by the author and the readers are the artist that would add the colours they wanted ^^

Does it mean that the friend finally realised that he actually liked him at one point towards the end of the chapter?

I think so

The friend never liked him? He just realised his childhood friend confessed to him at one point.

His tail is gone but since his a kid its hard for him to control it (mostly when his excited but in this case a little heartbroken). So Shingo put a headband on him in case they pop out. People will just think the tail was part of his costume.
Can somebody explain the story? I'm a little bit confused
