
For everyone weirded out by the proposal thing it was very common back then with the upper class crowd. Parents would decide who their kids would marry based off which proposal had the best potential (money, status, alliances, etc). The kids would be engaged from an early age but wouldn't marry until they were of marrying age according to that time period they lived in. Sometimes the kids wouldn't even meet each other for the first time until the day of the wedding, usually by then they both had come into adulthood. Unfortunately half the time the girl would be marrying a guy twice her age and/or not even someone she picked herself.
