it wasn't explained exclusively but we can gather from the story that he felt extremely lonely while growing up and didn't really get any affection, not sure when it happened but some time in his adult life he got into camboying. and that bmpraise and appreciation from strangers is probably what made him keep doing it, which is why when he finally found comfort and worth in being with Sun he felt okay that it was time he let that go.
