It seems like stylists start working in shops while they are in beauty school in Japan, and then complete their training at the shop before they become actual stylists. While it sounds like a long time the first couple years he was probably going to school at the same time (or longer if he went to school part time), then he would've been training in specific techniques before and after work during the remaining years. It seems the beauty industry in Asia prefers longer apprenticeships and training periods, because I've seen the scenario in multiple mangas and dramas (and not just for hair stylists, but manicurists too). Whereas in the US you get most of your training in school and maybe a short internship after that (from what I've observed with friends who became stylists).
Does anyone know about translations being done or something? Because it is SO hard to wait!!
