I'm not American nor am I familiar with its history, so I got a question.... Was homosexuality ever illegal in the US? I only got my resources from films and media but it seems like most of the queer films I've seen set in 1930s-1960s America punishes homosexuality... Like that film with Alan Turing or fellow travelers(Haven't seen this yet)... Was it really that scary to be gay in those times in the US? Was chemical castration really a punishment?
Not an expert on the laws... but, I do have some knowledge on it to a point(?) It technically was illegal, until 2002, Lawrence v. Texas, I believe.
It was illegal in all 50 states and was punished pretty heavily depending on the state. Some punished it via death penalty, etc.
Sometime in the 1950's there was even witch hunts to find homosexual individuals... homosexuality was not an easy thing for a lot of people in the world back then.
The biggest thing that is true and even to this day continues is some religion in the US still believe same sex relationships, etc. Are believed to be "Sin" and "immoral or deviant."

Yeaahhh it's pretty crazy, same-sex marriage in the US wasn't even legalized until around June 26th of 2015! Which is even more recent.
