Checkmate(TAN)
Ughhhhh this webtoon ripped open some old wounds of mine, it hit a bit too close to home. Reading the male lead's thoughts as he reflected on his past was like looking at my old self, who was always stuck in second place. It was a bitter, painful memory that I really didn't want to recall. Hopefully, it doesn't linger too long on his flashbacks, because those really hurt, at least for me. He becomes all stalker-y and obsessed with bringing down his old arch rival when he learns he's involved in some weird art scandal that I don't really get the gravity of. It seems like a minor incident, honestly. The gist of it, is something like his rival actually had his artwork stolen by his art teacher and claimed as his, and then he destroyed them? I don't think this warrants as a major scandal, since people don't really care about what happens in the art world. Maybe if he was a celebrity, it would make sense why this is so important, because the general public loves reading gossip magazines and stuff like that. But artists? Nahhhhh. Only the true art enthusiasts would give a crap. It's not worth quitting your job, and becoming a reporter, just to bring him down, because no one would care. It's also impossible to become a reporter if you've never trained or studied it. Unless by reporter, he means online blogger or something like that, and not a professional reporter. I don't know, but the male lead's plan seems stupid as hell, and a complete waste of time and effort. What does writing about his rival's high school days have to do with his current predicament? Telling the whole world he was a star student doesn't make him seem like a bad guy, which I thought he was aiming for? After reading his ridiculous scheme, I think this guy shouldn't even be in second place because he's not intelligent at all. The art is stylized in this webtoon, with the author choosing to draw in basically black and white tones, with shades of beige and yellow, but I don't really like the art style as it is, so choosing to not color it doesn't add more depth or enhance the drawings, in my opinion.
Dangerous Convenience Store
The prologue seems to be hinting at a comedic relationship between the convenience store clerk and his gangster boss customer. Giving it 2 stars for now, since it doesn't quite pull me in, but there's nothing to find faults with yet. The art is alright, clean and easy to read. Update: New chapters are progressing too fast, and it skips straight to smut instead of developing proper romance. The first smut scene is blah, just the gangster guy has a big thing, since that's all it focuses on in the previous chapters, with him buying XXL condoms. Sigh. Lameeeeeeee.
Monster Duke's Daughter
The art for this webtoon is awful, it's so lazily drawn with complete lack of details and over usage of chibis and thick lines with solid coloring. Yechhh. I don't know if the author is doing this on purpose to make the characters seem cuter, because they seem to do a good enough job drawing the serious character, which is the father, better than the rest. But then again, looking at the prologue, it seems most characters are drawn rather poorly, so I don't have high expectations for this in terms of art. Now, in terms of the story so far, it deviates from isekai genre by having the girl lead character read a book in her father's library, and she finds out she will die in 5 years. So she decides she'll live life to the fullest and enjoy whatever time she will have left. This is an uninteresting premise, since she lacks strong motivation, and I don't care that she will die, from how this was executed. Honestly, maybe in this case, isekai would work better, because the point of isekai is that your past life also influences how you live your current life. But here, it's an empty slate, because all she knows is that she's a kid who will die, and her father doesn't love her. There's no strong emotional attachment nor desire to live, because she doesn't even know what living is all about. She's only 5, for heaven's sakes. Honestly, she shouldn't even know what dying means, because she's far too young and sheltered as a duke's daughter to even know of death. And that's where this webtoon's story quickly unravels. She's too knowledgeable to be only 5, but acts too childish to be mature enough to know the concept of death. Heck, she even refers to herself constantly in third person, and acts all cute and stupid most of the time, with the most mundane thoughts running through her head 95% of the time. I don't even know how a 5 year old can read so well, and understand the concept of foster children... And don't bother explaining she's so smart because she has non-human lineage, because it never showed so far that being part demon or whatever increases your intelligence, since she's clearly not smart, and her father isn't known for being smart either. Nope nope nope. This is just bad across the board.
The Magic Tower Librarian
Wow, this webtoon is a classic example of wasting space. Literally, there is more white space between the panels than the amount of panels per chapter. If you add up the total area of white space, it would be probably 2-3x more than the area of the panels combined. It makes it really annoying to look at, with so much emptiness separating each panel. The panels are tiny as hell, and even the art is somewhat mediocre, it just smushes everything in cramped, small windows that don't fully bring the story to life. I'm not even sure why this webtoon was drawn in webtoon format, because it doesn't take advantage of the flowing nature of webtoons, where the movement is from top to bottom. This could have easily been drawn as a comic style with direction of reading going from left to right. The coloring and lines are super bold and dark, like Western style coloring, which I'm not a fan of at all. The girl in the cover image gets killed off in the third chapter, how misleading to put her on a cover like a feature character. The lore of this world is terribly explained, even though it spends a good chunk of the first chapter trying to explain it. Why is this magic tower is important and cool, and how come the royal family can't go in, but librarians like the plain male character can work there and read the books? Why is the library there like a regular library, with normal fiction on the shelves, instead of precious magical texts and ancient tomes? Magic Tower is the most lazy name I've seen so far. Also, I think the author shot themselves on the foot because they can't even get their characters straight. When the princess is introducing herself, she says she's the fourth daughter, but when the guards say she died, they called her the second princess. When I read that, I rubbed my eyes and scrolled all the way back up to make sure that they were talking about the same character. How can the fourth daughter be the second princess? She should be the fourth princess, if my math is correct. Well, it seems like this story might go for a Groundhog Day type plot, where if the main character fails his mission, he needs to redo the day over and over. If so, I'd be interested in reading how this goes. But so far, it's a meh webtoon. Update: The size of the panels get better with newer chapters, thankfully. It's no longer a Groundhog Day plot, which is a bit disappointing, since I'd love to see it in a webtoon or a manga, other than Re:Zero. I'm adding a star since this seems to be improving as it goes along, but I'll still have to wait and see if the plot will become more original from here. Update #2: Well, thank you for proving me wrong, author. It doesn't happen a lot, but I'm finding this more and more enjoyable with each new chapter. Kudos to you, here's another star from me. Give me more Groundhog Day shenanigans, and I'm a happy reader. Update #3: Finished. Seems like this was cancelled, as the ending was extremely rushed and didn't address any of the major plot lines.
It's Not Like That (Gangto)
The BL author tries to get a job, due to pressure from his parents, but he accidentally submits a draft of his novel instead of a cover letter. It's not that bad, since his draft didn't have any smut material anyway. The CEO reads it and thinks it's a love letter because the male lead is pining for someone, and he's intrigued because he's never loved anyone before. The head of the team is also interested in the male lead because he's a fan of the author. From the excerpt of what he submitted, he honestly seems like an awful writer, so I don't know why apparently all of Korea is in love with his novel. If that counts for good writing, maybe that's why the story of this webtoon is crap. It makes no sense for the CEO of a successful company to be interested in an incompetent person like the male lead, because he doesn't stand out at all. All the characters are one-note and bland, and they're all stupid. Art is average level for a webtoon.
Awa's life
The dogs are kinda cute, but that's about it. There's no plot, and the lack of dialogue/written text makes this unengaging to read. And while the design is cute, the everyday events and encounters aren't cute nor funny. Sometimes, it's even confusing, because I don't know what the magic seed that multiplies the dogs is. The concept of textless dog adventures sounds nice, but it's not executed well here.
An Immoral Night
The art for this webtoon is quite good, I really like the detailing of the clothes, the headpieces, and the facial features of the characters. The panelling flows well. Although the female lead is rather weak right now, it seems possible she can grow stronger, because she stands up to the other concubines, but we'll see. The smut in this is... different. Instead of the usual moaning and weird noises, they talk in a somewhat antiquated manner about sex, and it's sort of refreshing to read, since I haven't seen this much, if at all. Maybe it will get better in later chapters, but this is a better smut webtoon than most out there. Update: I believe this is completed at 23 chapters. The female lead doesn't change at all, but what can you expect from a porn manhwa? It's too bad we never see the child that they keep talking about wanting to have.
The Viridescent Crown
Female lead falls into the role of a villainess in a novel she wrote when she was young. It's cool to see an isekai into a world created by the person who died, instead of someone who is just a reader or player. I hope it comes into play more during the story, when she reflects on her own creation, that would add extra depth to her and her characters. The art is nice. I don't have any real complaints, but I'm keeping my rating average till more chapters are released. Update: This story is bland as heck. Nothing happens between each chapter, and it's just piling on random shit for the female lead to worry about without her actually accomplishing anything.
Sentimental Lovers
I dislike this webtoon, it's really mediocre, and you can tell immediately from how it just launches in the first chapter without proper introduction of the characters. It tries to resolve things by flashbacking in the third chapter, which boggles my mind why the author wants to tell this basically zero plot story with non-linear progression. Basically the meek guy likes the strong male model guy, and he lets him use him as a living onahole as much as he wants, until he's upset because he fell too hard for him, thinking his feelings won't be reciprocated. And there's some other guy who's a tsundere to the meek guy, but he's probably in love with him in reality, and afraid to confess, too. Also, the art is really not my style, it looks too vivid with the neon colors. Like all the characters have jaundice, with their yellow eyeballs...and yellow pupils...pink hair... Lame. Skip!
