Don't worry, others feel the same way. Japanese for example, has been used as an aesthetic, like using Kanji wrong and it doesn't even make sense because they just used it clearly for aesthetic, like on clothes. I was also in the same position as you, it used to be not a problem for me because I was their age too, so it doesn't feel as weird. Now that I'm looking at it when I'm older, it IS weird. When everyone assumes the second guy is a love interest, therefore it's suddenly a love triangle and he's an option (Yes, I'm talking about Oushi from A Sign of Affection). The female lead couldn't give a single shit about him, let alone having him as an option either.   reply
