You have to know whats the wrong thing to do in order to not do it again. Your comparison with a child its a little inaccurate, since 1. She's kinda naive, but not in a child's level 2. To not eat sand isn't as obvious as "hey, this country's kinda messed up with rebellion plots so lock yourself in your room to not cause me trouble"
