I like this story, I really do, but maybe it's because I've been desensitized by play or die mangas but these kids seem like they're overreacting. Like the"social death" seems weak, especially if you haven't really done anything. That one girl actually did something worse not to get sacrificed than if she had just done nothing and let the video come out. And another person's video was just of him shoplifting (not to mention another classmate was in that video) and he just stops showing up to school. Like really?
I think it has to do with their culture. Like I live in the US. If I was related to someone that went to jail, people would forget it after a few decades or whatnot depending on how relevant to the times.
But in Japan. You are always going to be that person related to a criminal for generations. And people will remind you about that. Job opportunities and other things will be locked from you for a lifetime just because you happened to know them. So a social death is a big thing over there. That's why they really are pushy about privacy and reputation. Because once it's out, it's kinda your label forever.
So some Western countries may not understand what's so crazy, but an Asian person over there may feel sympathy.
Hope this clarified this. This is just assumptions from what I have learned through self research and connecting ideas in my head. So it may be completely wrong. Anyone feel free to correct me.

I guess that makes sense, but is anyone beside the classmates seeing these social death videos? Maybe I missed it but it seemed like only those participating in the sacrifice vote were seeing the videos? No one seems to really be suffering any real consequences? Like is that teacher going to be arrested or fired from his job, is that kid going to have to pay back what he stole/be expelled from school, etc?
I think it might actually be that it put it online? Seeing how it says 'spreading online'. Like it would on facebook in recent times. It's happened quite a few times that something like that has happened (embarrassing videos, pictures, posts, etc) , and in a way that is a social 'death', seeing that you can never truly get rid of that track record anymore afterwards. So people will always be able to find or see that embarrassing thing that accidentally got spread.
I think that is more what they mean with social death.

No angst, please. Maybe the two blonds get together and the main guy and the other friend get together? So no one feels left out lol.
