Since it's obvious that Ye Zi had a really hard childhood, what you said about the father catching up was something that wouldn't surprise me if it did happen in this manga. Ofc I hope it doesn't happen since I love cute Ye Zi just as everyone else, I just hoped that the mother would try to start a new life with Ye Zi^^. you know that 'grope' could be the petting the butt of the dog near the tail. Since our main freaked out when touched there he couldn't see if he was going to do the finger flex of scratching the dog's bottom (the top part). It's not something most people think about doing but there are plenty of videos of dogs and cats loving the butt scratch. The reason it should be suspect is, no one I have ever known as done the butt scratch when laying with the critter
