This is only a theory, which I have two of which can both either be wrong or correlating, granny knows that rakan favored mao mao’s mother, and assuming she had to take more customers afterwards, granny might not know who the father is and assumes rakan just wants mao mao because they look similar, and has never had any actual intention of giving mao mao to rakan probably because she resents him for what he had done to mao maos mother, who from my understanding was someone very important in the brothel. She doesnt hate him, she was just traumatized as a child of a creepy bloody (cause the granny would always beat him) old man with a gross smile that would try to take her away claiming to be her father. She doesnt blame him as well, cause as someone who grew up in the brothel, she knows that the courtesans had the knowledge how to prevent/abort pregnancy, so her mother getting pregnant with her was probably her plan all along. Its just that Rakan being away at that time was not part of her plan.
