I think she was still alive. In the novel, after Tia is rescued by Celdric, he tells her that her mother died at the hand of Lawrence so it must have been after she was put in prison. The mother only cared about Lawrence and Tia knew that. She was also aware that she would be betrayed/killed by Lawrence someday.
