This is way more of a normal reaction than just simply accepting the change. He feels like he's cheating on his lover, when he isn't. It's a very realistic reaction.

It was explained that he had a preconceived image of the prince- of a weak and helpless child, and he passed away with the last thing he saw was Karas golden eyes. It was hinted on the novel that the small signs were there but he was in denial because of above reasons.
