i can't even take this seriously it's like the MC is brain dead, he's been raped attacked and robed actually notifies the police only to have his assailant appear right in front of the police doesnt report him immediately. Has multiple opportunities to do so while he's alone in college in a more public setting or even on his walk to his apartment to reach a patrolling officer as a precaution, but decides to literally do nothing.....I know characters have to be impossibly dumb for these events to work in BL but it just takes you completely out of the story when the character is just this dumb.
The thing if he’s so terrier he would have never went home. The kid has been established he’s completely scared of confrontation. Even if he couldn’t rely on the police the next best thing is wait in a 24hr convenience store that’s so many in Japan (Since his money was stolen so can’t do a motel/hotel) then attempt to go during broad daylight.i know he was escaping his bullies but he could duck in another store not in the line of sight. He can call the police while there to check the apartment for him. That’s taking into consideration his fear and just simple logic of an assailant who has repeatedly broken into your home and you are aware of it. I’m not condemning him for being scared nor that he was attacked I’m annoyed simple pragmactic thinking goes out the window in these plots is all. Even something actually screaming upon seeing his assailant as he opens the door to notify a possible neighbor of a disturbance. If he was the forethought to report an attack and be established as avoiding conflict to utterly change himself to be unrecognizable, he’s clearly not stupid but has become for the plot’s sake.
It is so bizarre so many people are getting offended about a comment on inconsistent characterization about an established character personality in reaction to trauma aversion but don’t care whatsoever when plots of a similar nature have a character just readily accept being raped and gush and cheer when they fall in love with their hot sempai rapist. Ya’ll pick and choose in the worst way in actually giving a shit.
I agree. Also people forget the ongoing stigma of men who have been victims of assault. He's a boy saying that his stuff was stolen and he has a criminal around. But said criminal hasn't appeared recently. Police most likely will internally say "Oh, well. He's a boy, he'll be fine" There's also the stigma against rape in Japan. You think it's hard for Japanese women to report a rape? Try saying that as a man. He'd most likely get laughed at and made fun of. Men aren't as supportive of each other in cases like these as you may think. To them, that man who was assaulted is basically emasculated and they joke about how he's now a gay butt boy.
To take it to the extreme, think of Terry Crews and Johnny Depp. They were basically told no one would believe them or take them seriously as victims of abuse because they were men.
I'm not sorry if this offends anyone because you don't make fun of victims of abuse or call them retards EVER.
What inconsistency? The author established the kid as meek and a loner. His mom also isn’t home. He’s by himself most of the time. This is realistically how someone like him would react to a situation that he never confronted before. Given the kid was also bullied during his earlier years, and most likely had no one to help him out, it’s easy to see how he thinks he can’t seek help this time either. Although, he did, and the police undermined the severity of his situation.
Also, don’t generalize. How you know these ppl who pick at your comment don’t also pick at those cliche trashy BLs with romanticized rape? I do.
Go read the thread on Happyface143 because I’m not going to waste my time explaining how continuity writing works when people clearly don’t understand how character writing works in a genre that frequently character assassinates in as little as panel to panel . Let alone adding such a traumatic experience such as rape as it ties into how an established characterization should play out if the character’s experience is truly in mind and not for just for the sake of the author just furthering the plot through pivotal moments. BL is a terrible example of actual good storytelling. Some exceed and are outliers but it’s just capitalizing porn in a more aesthetically palatable medium after all.
And I’m not even bothering about the second portion of your statement my post history speaks for itself in how I approach and feel about sexual violence fetishized. I literally have a reputation. I talk the talk and walk the walk I can’t say the say the same for many of the readers. And if they have taken my post as insulting their delicate sensitivities, they didn’t bother to actually read my post and if they project their own limited understanding of realistic and thoughtful rape experiences within a story that’s creating unreliable and irrational cause and effects that’s their own business. Not everyone handles trauma the same nor should they. But when writing and drawing these experiences there is absolutely wrong with critiquing if there is fault in that author’s portrayal especially so when ultimately this is just another rape to love plot yet again and character motivation and actions are done to introduce this faster. My opinion is as valid. It’s your opinion to think otherwise if that’s the interpretation you’ve decided to die on.
“I literally have a reputation”
Mf nobody knows who you are and I’m not gonna go through your history to see your redundant know-it-all posts. It’s fiction and it’s been TWO chapters, not even enough to judge. Using fancy wordings aint gonna make you look any smarter, trust me. Get off your high horse and stop generalizing people. Just don’t read BL at all if the porn irritates you so much. You’re contradicting yourself with the amount of annoyance you show against BL despite reading tons of them. Are you a masochist or what?
“Not everyone handles trauma the same” Exactly. So stop pretending you can tell a rape victim how they should act. The author has a history of writing dark plots. Clearly that was what she’s going for. It’s not a rape to love story btw. I’ve read the raws. You clearly don’t know that and love to assume just to show how righteous your mindset is, do you? Funny how that works.
Cute fun fact in Korean culture boys are associated with peppers as there is a superstition that when a baby boy is born you hang a chili outside their door and to welcome the baby’s birth announce their arrival from the spirit world. Girls get a charcoal instead. And neighbors stay away for a period of days to allow the mother and child to rest. So Youngmin says chili specifically because it’s associated with the penis in Korean customs and it’s just a cute euphemism.
For those defending Jeonghan actually think about this plot with real context. They were in a relationship for 8 years. It’s absurd to think that no level of communication was expressed in their relationship. It’s likely just plot armor but no one stays in an 8 year relationship and never once communicates they are unhappy and the reason for it. Even in “10 years I loved you the most” that monstrous tear jerker communication is expressed and that’s saying something. It’s great for Jeonghan for leaving a toxic relationship but never saying why not even once? He doesn’t have to wait for Kangwoo to change any longer, but living in homophobic South Korea you really expect Kangwoo to willingly know your desire for a relationship that’s entirely out and proud when it can ruin your entire social and work lives without verbally communicating this? Let alone dramatically breaking up with him who realistically you’d avoid at all costs let alone becoming close soon after such short time to start dating your ex’s boss. The same boss you know is workplace abusing the boyfriend you once loved. Unless you’re being petty or vindictive who wouldn't do such a thing if not with malice? That’s adding insult to injury. He doesn’t owe Kangwoo anything but that’s just being cruel if you even think about it realistically. As for the boss he was horrible to Kangwoo before the breakup and continued to be so as he pursued Jeonghan, he’s just a terrible person who’s had it out for Kangwoo from the beginning. Nothing about the plot is believable but if we are to believe Jeonghan or the boss’s respective reasoning and actions they are just so completely immature and no better than kangwoo‘s in that regard in being oblivious in how they act emotionally harmful. I also think it’s so stupid that Kangwoo gets a love interest that just cures his internalized homophobia for the plots sake but now he’s getting dick down because he now needs to be ukefied too instead it’s utter stupidity more so because it’s never properly communicated what he did wrong in his previous relationship and gets a consolatory love interest pushed onto him to tie the plot up.
I just can’t get over how all over the place the tone of this plot is. Our leads get told they’re smack dab in the middle in the gates to hell, yet decide now is the time to go on a date? I understand the author wants to reinforce the importance of our main couple but the decisions and motivations of the two come across as so ridiculous in how they prioritize given the setting and plot all I want is the actually read the plot not fan service fluff that doesn’t actually add to anything. Let them have the sex they want after the actual plot is established and ironed out, who has time for this filler when you’ve just moments before come to the conclusion Leo and others like him are in danger.
I would agree if it weren’t this exact mindset has had Taehoon raped, and Taehoon attacked twice. It’s just a matter of common sense but it’s been established that’s of lesser importance to the main couple. But given the overall genre and seeing as I’m being downvoted for questioning the importance of their romance, safety and plot continuity is of little importance to the readers so the author is clearly just meeting the demand.
As much as how I really like this manhwa, I have to agree that the tone is really all over the place. As a response, I just stopped minding it.
Personally though, I think why they had a date was really because of Leo. Taehoon himself was quite against the idea but Leo was very persistent. I think this is because how confident Leo is with his abilities and also because, maybe, since a huge storm is coming, they thought that now is the best time to this while they are still able to.
The gates of hell is yet to be though.
I just don’t buy that they’d need to expose themselves so openly at the cost of endangering themselves. I can understand needing a moment to themselves but just wouldn’t go walking around in the forest filled with danger and right is just plain stupidity. At least take coverage somewhere or if so hopefully not back into town. Leo knows better so it just seems like a ignorance is bliss scenario. Regardless of if he wants to spend time with Taehoon, it’s just the time and place. Maybe I’m just too pragmatic to be romantic.
No no i get what you're saying and hmm when I read it they didn't seem to be that far i hope he isn't going to far. His house is fill with a lot of people and I think he wants space to at least cherish the time they have in case you know they die during this fight but if he goes to far with my baby I'm kicking Leo's butt. I'm hoping that they are far enough to have a private talk or whatever but close enough that if they run it takes them like less than 10 minutes to get back to the house.
I really think now that it is because of Leo's lack of considerable fear due to his confidence in his overwhelming strength. The fact that they have a lot of allies with many having supernatural abilities and their recent skirmish with Sigmund which was weakened causing him to retreat and the revelation of the impending shit that is going to happen to Seishem has pushed Leo to have this date.
All the crap that happened to Taehoon was because he was alone and Leo was not in the immediate surrounding. But now since Leo is there and, again, with the revelation of the Gates of Hell shit, I guess he really felt that now is the best time to do it, you know, during the calm before the storm.
I really don’t like characters like Doori. They use people, expect things for simply showing up as they’ve always gained praised, and minimize other people’s thoughts/ problems to booster their often self absorbed lives. Not saying he should have to give up 20 kisses in exchange for help, but he’s got the look the gift horse in the mouth attitude that’s really annoying with the standard homophobic uke character archetype. It’s so annoying, given how demanding and persistent he is to achieve his goal in continuing to attend college through the help of someone who’s giving up their free time and being exploited in a bet that favors Doori to pay for his poor ass to continue using the pc cafe and etc for practice gaming instead of gaining an education like the rest of society. Esports is now a full time position in actuality, while I personally don’t understand the appeal nor it’s monetary incentive, getting an education and then pursuing a passion is totally doable, at least then you are being responsible and reasonable. Nothing wrong with then gaming to your hearts content. Not this have your cake and eat it too entitlement that he’s clearly too immature to understand.
Whaaaat I don’t really see your point of view. He just asked Noah for a favor to team up with him in a game they’re both good at (which Noah himself said isn’t even that hard to do) so how is taking up his free time? Also how is he homophobic just bc he didn’t like the idea of kissing someone? Its weird to do it with someone you just met, he just feels uncomfortable. Also it’s just a webtoon, why are you taking it so seriously with the whole ‘getting an education like the rest of society’ like he’s literally just a two dimensional made up character and we’re reading about his romance story w the other dude
Well, i can see why some people could dislike a character. But i agree with you. I also dont really care about how bad a characters personality could be lol. All i care about is how well these comics can entertain me. As long as it's fictional and i know that i wont get affected by it. But so far, im really entertained by this webtoon. It's got a different feel compared to most BL's uwu
Did you not read the plot? They’re not just playing a game during any random time. They’re playing while both of them are still attending university most days. That’s time he could spend studying and various other activities we might not be aware of. Doori asked him to help to ensure Doori wins a cash prize that will be more beneficial to Doori than to either of them, because Doori wants to kill two birds with one stone. His gaming addiction and pay for college they he personally screwed up. And while he was asked for kisses in exchange, Doori still gets more out of the agreement included making someone pay for his gaming sessions at the pc cafe in exchange. Doori is clearly uncomfortable with being kissed by a man more than anything as he clearly said so when the kiss was first suggested. Don’t even try and pretend that’s not homophobic. The kiss isn’t the concern, it’s being kissed by a man. I have nothing against the plot but I’m perfectly in my right to not like a character that’s a specific archetype in this genre that seen comedic but has a very negative stereotype, the homophobic uke who’s charmed by the cool seme. You can like this sure, but do not equate this as any advocacy for for lgbt it’s just more fetishized homophobia fantasy with a comedic angle. That’s the basis of their character relationship. There’s literally four other webtoons with this same premise who’ve updated in the last two months. And whether or not I don’t like a 2D character makes no sense to an argument, the medium has no relevance. I could not like a lady on tv who I can only see and not touch too,how would that have any relevance to my reason behind not liking something?
you didn’t understand me at all. I didn’t say you don’t have the right to dislike a character. I just wanted to understand your POV. I was saying why are you taking it so seriously talking about Doori’s future when he’s just a made up character. He has no future. The author decided to make their webtoon focusing on gaming so it’s going to focus on gaming. I don’t understand why you had to bring up how Doori shouldn’t be gaming and should be focusing on education like why is that at all relevant? This is a BL webtoon made for the purpose of entertainment and laughs it’s not to be taken that seriously or deep. And do you not know what I meant by “two dimensional” ?? It wasn’t meant to be taken as LITERALLY 2D on a TV but as someone who has no DEPTH. He’s purely FICTIONAL. So why tf are his education and career prospects that concerning to you?
Also if Doori is originally a straight guy why is it homophobic to not want to be kissed by a man?? I’m just genuinely curious about that. He can have no prejudice against it, it can be that he just doesn’t want to be kissed because he’s straight, right? He didn’t show any disgust, more like confusion. At least that’s how I interpreted it so far. Just because he’s straight he doesn’t have the right to say no to an unwanted kiss?? Also nearly ALL of the BL on this website does not advocate for LGBT, there are only very few gems that actually focus on LGBT and society issues but most of these comics are for entertainment! If it bothers you so much I don’t think you should read this genre.
first of all u have to remember this is fiction, not saying u have support and absolutely like these type of stories, it's up to u to like a story afterall, but how do u even know they're using all of their free time to play games?? we are just in the very early chapters of this webtoon so maybe as the story progresses we might even see them studying since doori has promised to help the ml study so that his grades don't drop
and i'm all for pro-education but u can't force your standards on everyone, going to college & getting a degree doesn't always guarantee success esp in this day and age, these days most employers prefer skills over grades anyways
and how is refusing a kiss from the same gender considered homophobic?? even the gay ppl would refuse a kiss from a guy that they're barely acquainted with, just think about it, would you be comfortable kissing a person whom u just met a few days ago? regardless of the circumstances??
When did I ever say he’s using all his free time but rather his time in general when not in university? School doesn’t just end from 9-5. He could have a specific time gaming for himself prior to their agreement. Time he divided school, projects, homework, hobbies, etc. Now more time is dedicated to gaming that could be used elsewhere that’s my point. I said he’s using the free time of someone else in general to help himself I never said I knew the length. You can position that as a favor or a job, but if someone asks for compensation in exchange for their time thats completely reasonable. In fact we call that a job. We don’t know how he occupies his day, there’s no need to put words in my mouth or exaggerate.
And I hate the argument it’s just fiction you’re not smart for saying that. You can write fiction and still write something that can be problematic. That may not necessarily be this plot, but the constant need to reaffirm that this is fiction speaks more about you than me, that this is yours or others go to refute an argument. You can like something and it not align with others whether its fictional or not, it is such a pointless point to stand on.
My pro-education stance is a Doori values his education enough to go these lengths not me caring whether or not he receives a secondary education. He wants time to play games and gain an education. His parents gave him an option he choose this method for his own convenience and their were consequences. This isn’t soap box preaching. Read the plot you’re defending before again using my words wrongly.
And again the argument who would let a stranger kiss them in general does not stand. And your refusal to acknowledge it’s based in bigotry/ homophobia is embarrassing. South Korea the country this plot is based in with a history of homophobia where a male protagonist is worried about another male student kissing him, repeatedly runs from doing so and is now in the most recent chapter moved their kiss to a secluded area away from judgment. Stop making things up to fit your narrative. The author pointedly brings up gender as the cause for his hesitation. Last I checked that’s clearly homophobia. I could care less about any of these points as they affect the actual plot. I simply said I don’t like a character and stated the reasons why. I didn’t attack the plot or the author I don’t see the need for your vehement defense for a plot that’s a dime a dozen.
And that is perfectly fine. But there is clearly established context involved in his reaction and as to why he’s alarmed by kissing a boy. If he simply didn’t want to kiss another boy because he’s straight or didn’t want to no one would fault him. I’m pointing out his reasons, his reactions, his need to gossip about it, and his fear or observation. And how while both gain something, Doori doesn’t want to hold up an agreement and still reap the reward notice he’s moved the goal posts repeatedly. I don’t understand why people are doing logic gymnastics for a clearly establish BL archetypal character like they’ve never read a Doori type before. If you like this type of character that’s fine, just acknowledge this characterizing it’s not some new experience. I complained about Doori due to this type of characterization and character motivation being self absorbed. If others like him or the plot that doesn’t concern me, as I didn’t even mention issues or disliking the plot itself or Doori’s role in the plot.
alright if i misunderstood u criticizing the plot so be it, ig it's my fault and since u know how SK is w homosexuality, u might also know how kissing in public in general regardless of the gender is not looked highly upon in SK, on top of that u expect Doori to be okay w kissing out in the open?? in a country where being a homosexual could potentially lead them to get chewed off by the society? u must be well aware of these kinds of straight guy suddenly turns gay tropes in BL, this is exactly what happens every single time
u saying things like these, isn't it your own narrative as wel??
ah i posted it before i could properly type it out, anyways not saying u are completely wrong either, i'm bad at putting what i want to say in words and whatever i'm saying rn might come off as hostile but i just want to u to know that this is not an argument but a discussion, all things i've said here are my current thoughts but thoughts change and i'm flexible enough to accept new ones bc i firmly believe that if there is no change in a person's thoughts & beliefs over time then a person can't grow
Wasn’t this my point to begin with? That he worried about how it will be perceived because two men are kissing?? South Korean may not have pda often but ifs worried about how same- sex pda mayb play most importantly isn’t that homophobia. It being gender/ sexuality specific? Is there another word you know of I haven’t heard about before that means this? And suddenly turns gay trope was that not again in my very first post a point I addressed with falling for a cool seme because the plot demands so? This is exactly why I said your contribution to this argument was literally pointless. You’re having to talk back what you just said. When I addressed all of this already. Who said anything about my supposed narrative in this? I’m literally pointing out elements of a plot the author themselves has drawn and written in dialogue to contextualize them with the setting, character motivation, and overall plot. That’s simple observation. That you decided to misinterpret my words is on you.
I never badmouthed the character I said didn’t like the character type/ characterization and stated reasons why. I never said anything about the character being monstrous and being incapable of growth or again anything about the plot. It might not have been your intention to appear argumentative and I accept that. I’m sorry if I in turn came across as hostile or argumentative as well. I just was rather pointing out a type of characterization I didn’t like openly that was all.
also i just wanted to add that in asian culture we are always taught to fit in with the others, it's looked down upon when u try to be "different", and since it's ingrained in us, it's quiet hard for ppl to go against the established "rules/ideals" since we are scared to be frowned upon later, not saying everyone is the same tho, maybe this is why i think Doori's actions aren't homophobic
ps: sorry if u turn out to be asian and it feels like i'm preaching but i just wanted to explain my thoughts a bit, anyways this is going to be my last post, see u around

It’s funny that this is a BL where we hate all the stereotypical BL gays but love the one opinionated female character. Imfao. This author is genius.
