His mother needed mental help, literally. She obviously kept throwing daggers at the people she loved and was extremely vindictive and hurtful without even intending to be so. At the end she would be in extreme suffering and paranoic as to why her efforts were in vain to help those around her. Good thing he was moved to live with his grandma.

Wtf is up with the prolongue? I'm so confused with Jack's attitude. He seems like a gentle kid, and Dora is sweet and diligent and they treat each other well. I honestly thought of dropping it just because of the prologue, it's like an omen of how much shit is going to happen.
The Jack of the prologue is all like "Hell hath no fury like A GUY scorned," I think. He's bitter at how she only seems to care about his mother and have eyes only for her, bending over backwards to win her affection, while she never lets *him* (the one bending over backwards for HER) get any piece of her heart.
