Can someone explain to me translation group rivalries or etiquette or whatever it is that made the translator put that note at the end of ch 10? Why does it matter if two unpaid unofficial groups translate the same thing for fun? I'd understand if revenue or some other competitive incentive was involved but...

I’m guessing it’s kinda rude to do it . Translators put a lot of work into translating a chapter and it usually takes a long time since it’s honestly really hard to do . Redrawing is the hardest part and usually takes 5 hours or more. Now let’s say you took days to finish a translating a chapter and someone who uploads faster but has lower quality than you starts working on the same series. Us readers don’t really care too much since we just want to be able to read it but If I was translating something I would kinda feel disrespected if someone did that . It’s like putting a lot of effort into something but someone else does the same thing but faster with lower quality and they get more praise than you just because they do things faster.

I actually hate the lower quality translations because they get so difficult to read so I can't fully understand why people prefer them even if they are faster. But regardless, thank you for your explanation as that does make some sense even if I still don't fully understand. You if you upload a higher quality work it would still end up being read over the lower quality stuff but I digress. You say it's rude so I'll treat it like another culture I don't understand and respect that it's rude.

Ex-scanlation member here! Indeed, scan groups and solo translators arent paid to do translations however it is moreso an etiquette thing and also quality vs quantity.

On etiquette: translation teams generally have a work flow for various parts of the scanlation to produce a great translation for all to enjoy and it takes a lot of time and effort on everyone’s parts. With established and highly experienced scan teams, the works produced and shown here are often on par with official translations. Also, if scan teams were to give this project to solo translators, previously used foot notes on names and terms can be preserved. It’s also about respecting who got there first and doing compromises whenever needed. At the end of the day, we all want to read the next chapter and are thankful for the efforts of the scanlation team/individual.

This then connects to quality and quantity: I know we’re all eager to read a story that clicks with us but we have to remember that as unofficial translations, it is illegal and often, we allow ourselves to enjoy low quality scans just to get to the next chapter?? I totally am not shaming such behavior, I do that too! However, if were going to translate it, we may as well get a good quality out of it, right? Additionally, for instance, on the first chapter, the translator used ‘Rin’ as a short term for Irene’s name but on later chapters it fluctuates from ‘Rene’, and other names without a smooth flow on what really to use; maybe for most they don’t mind it but for me, personally, little details like this really throw me off. On the middle chapters alone, the grammar was terrible and some cleaning mistakes were very visible. Simple mistakes such as these can be lessened when there is proper communication and agreement on the scanlators’ involved and to those individuals who are eyeing to do it themselves.

    Sorry this got really long!

I completely understand why the unofficial translation team dropped it but I hate official translation companies because they only release one episode at a time. I wouldn't mind paying for a batch but they update so slowly for no reason at all for the same amount of quality a high quality unofficial translation team gives. To give you perspective, it's been a month since they dropped this series, but the unpaid, unofficial translation team is still ahead at 20 released chapters while Tappytoon has so far only released 12 after actually being paid to do this.

    I so agree with you

    DreamChaser April 22, 2020 11:45 am

    ???

They update a chapter a week. That's standard-to-fast for a fan translation, and the same rate at which most webtoons are actually released. Some groups translate chapters ASAP after release, but that's not the norm and the translations generally aren't as high a quality.

FOR REAL?! THEY ARE MAKING A MANGA?!

Kattz April 3, 2020 12:06 am

So my second try was thanks to Salamin saying that I'd like it by chapter 4. Decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and while I was okay with it by ch 3/4, I wouldn't say I fully liked it. I definitely liked it by ch 6 tho. I'm a big fan of resolving easily solvable misunderstandings as early as possible rather than playing it out for the drama. I also like characters mature enough to talk out their feelings when they know they need to rather than carrying out their usual childish antics so that gets a big plus from me. Thank you for telling me to stick with it.

Kattz April 2, 2020 5:31 pm

I tried to get thru the chapter but I found the characters, mainly the guy, to be annoying. Someone reply if this picks up and you think it's really good. Otherwise, I just can't continue

but the most recent chapter, chapter 4, is actually quite cute ansd gives the reason as to why he's such an a$$, just try, 4 chapters aren't that long

Alright then. I'll take your word for it. However, I'm gonna wait for it to update a bit because currently only 4 chapters are out rn. I don't want to finally start to like it only to have to immediately stop.

I did. I said in these comments here that I would continue reading and I made an update post just after this one saying when I started liking it vs tolerating it and why.

Kattz April 1, 2020 4:46 am

What was going on in that latest update? I understand when some words are left as their Japanese/Romanji counterparts due to there not being a proper English equivalent, but it went a bit overboard there and I could barely read this chapter.

....I chose to focus this comment on May, not just because she's one of my favorite characters but because I didn't believe I could stop myself from giving out spoilers otherwise. I was so excited at the first glimpses of Ash and Tilly a while back that I almost shouted out that they were in lesbians with each other. Not yuri themed fanservice like they keep doing with Wendy and Nightingale, but a genuine relationship.

May is my absolute favorite character because she's so beautifully complex in the way she is written for jest being a minor character. They showed more of here in this latest chapter than they have with her big, dynamic scene (that had most things taken out of it but I digress) that lead up to her role as the antagonist in the Cinderella play. Being the antagonist there also was also in line with the letter she just wrote to Petrov, who we find out has been supporting her along with the rest of the Honeysuckle family as her patron.

May struggled to be herself and felt like she was always acting. Even when not on stage, she was the great Star of the West and had to live up to that standard no matter where she went. In border town, she was still renowned but with a mostly uneducated populus, she didn't feel as heavy a need to keep up the act in front of anyone but the man she was in love with, Sir Eltek, and his wife, Irene. The two of them not only knew her, but Irene looked up to May as the experienced actress she strived to be. While with them, you could see May's inner turmoil of wanting to make Irene fail, wanting to take Sir Eltek for herself, but she didn't due to her pride in herself and her pride as an actress. She also came to genuinely like Irene more than just tolerate her as Irene did her best to become a better actress under May's tutelage. May was still jealous of Irene but seeing how naturally she and her husband acted and how deeply they loved each other, May put all her feelings into the antagonist role in Cinderella. She let out all her harsh rebukes and treatments toward Irene under the guise of acting as the villain. In doing so, she felt it her last hope to get Sir Eltek to see that she was was the better one and Irene was just a hopeless girl who had no backbone or skill.

When none of that worked and when Irene proved herself to really be a budding star as her nickname, Flower of the West, showed, May decided that she should give up on her love right then and there. That jealousy of how naturally the couple acted didn't disappear though. When with Knight Carter, there's a stark difference in now and how she used to act. Before, she acted confident, if a little mean spirited, the image of a diva on top, taking what she wants because it all belongs to her anyways. Now, she is more quiet and demur as if in deep thought as she is reevaluating her life and experiencing many things for the first time. Through her general time spent in Border Town, practicing for the play, and being around Sir Eltek, Irene, and even Sir Carter, May began to feel more and more empty as she realized she had no one and nothing but the act she kept up. She wanted to challenge that but needed to figure out who she was off a stage first. We see her taking up that challenge with the letter she just wrote to Petrov but also in the fact that she hasn't yet fully accepted Carter. She joins him for outings/dates but hasn't fully accepted him as a lover yet.

    Kattz May 5, 2020 4:46 pm

I also really love her because she's Nightingale's foil

Kattz March 23, 2020 11:26 pm

Or actually it could be an author error too? Anyways, the Duke saying in ch 16 that tea parties are essential for the lady of the house for the house doesn't make any sense. How can a tea party be essential when the current view towards tea in their society is that it's barbaric? Lol tea parties have become synonymous with small gatherings of people (usually or primarily women) in the English language due to England popularizing tea in the region around Victorian (...or was it Edwardian?) times. So maybe the translator or author made a slip up due to current naming schema in this world?

    Shiraori March 24, 2020 2:58 pm

maybe because in our world there's no such a thing like coffee party, it sounds a bit weird to me ( ̄∇ ̄")

    yochan March 25, 2020 4:40 am

I just realized it too. Is the korean for tea party actually just means "gathering"? Or it's the author mishap? I know that tea party just started in england around Victorian era, and their outfit pretty much fitting to the timeline. idk if noble ladies had any gathering like this before tea party existed, so the word "tea party" just used for convenient I guess.

But considering it's a novel world, maybe anything could be possible huh.

I see it as more of a father daughter relationship, i havent considered it lolicon till i saw your comment but what you say makes sense

    Kattz March 22, 2020 1:48 pm

I think what drew me to it is I saw it as a father-daughter relationship too. At first I thought he was just a flirty guy taking care of a little girl, but as the story kept giving off more and more romantic vibes, I realized that I was okay with it because he is very aware of the situation and isn't forcing her into anything "adult"
