I can't get over how that old ass man MARRED her at like 14 years old and putting all that mother bs responsibilities on her... like he trapped her because she basically can't remarry. You would think he would adopt her instead as the eldest but no... this is weird. I overlook it because the art and story is realistic and good.(i know the time period is different but i know its still weird at the time because the nobels will mention how young she is and and girls don't even debut a that age but at like 16/18. I thnk he married her because she is not connected to aristocracy and not greedy but had potential to be a head... i think he overheard talk about he bean plan to make a business and knew she was intelligent. So I don't believe he never seen her before asking for her marriage. He knew he was dying. I just think he was selfish because what about her? Shes a child having to act like an adult for his other children and ruining her rep. (๑•ㅂ•)و✧)
The reason why he married her instead of adopting her as the eldest child is to give her the legitimacy to be temporary Head whilst the children are growing, and at the same time giving her power to care for the children and the estate. He is also aware that she will never take things for herself because she sees him as her saviour and will do everything out of duty and gratitude towards him.
If she was adopted as a daughter instead of a mother, the children will resent her for being a preferred child (since they will consider her as competition rather than a carer and guardian). And she will have to come under the guardianship of the other relatives who will act as legal guardians. That will jeopardise his intentions of preparing his son as legitimate heir, because he is aware that the relatives only want to take advantage of that position out of greed.
Yeah i figured it was like this and so i find the story good go read but at the start i found it frustrating for her. She's essentially trapped in this role in which she is just suffering as a kid and dies because she decided to leave. All of this without her consent. It would be hard to marry someone else too. He did give her legitimacy but in the end he did it for his own desires and whims, i just found it selfish even if he pulled her out from poverty.
It is in a way selfish, but from Shuli's point of view, it gave her a sense of purpose and also made her a strong and happy person because she was able to choose her family instead of being stuck with her mother and brother who were willing to sell her to live a better life. So in the end it was the lesser evil because it was a relationship based on mutual trust.
She also said that it gave her more opportunities as it opened a wide world for her. The marquis didn't leave her unprepared, because he trained her as his successor in order to become a proper head. I would not say she did not have consent or was trapped, because she said it herself that this is the life she wanted and she would choose it again.
And that is what makes her and her relationship with the marquis honorable.
You're right i guess thats how she started to think of it with her second time going through ot. She changed a lot especially since she was older mentally to be prepared and reflect. They probably show it later on in the story that I haven't read yet. I do recognise that in those times it one of the only ways to be in a higher status and to gain opportunities. Unlike her childhood dream to become a merchant it would have been harder.
Tempted to kick claude awake..... Anyways im glad they portrayed jennette as a child because she really shows the unconditional love with athy and I feel like she would be less lonely p. The adults pit them against each other but they are a representation of familial love. Jennette being manipulated and still making her own judgments is showing growth and athy apologising is very mature, i love them two... they'll be steong together and probably will have a solution together.

Its a good plot especially when it makes use of reading from the "perspective" of one character wow ... also aisha is freaking done with this haha
i love that sm omg
Its genius because the author doesn't tell you. Its like a hidden story!
