Any physical contact is sufficient for transferring the magic, even just holding hands. Theo went overboard from the start because he needed a lot of power quickly and didn't want to care about his maiden. I think Umehiko is more strongly affected by side effects than most maidens because of Theo's strong powers. Considering how Momo called for someone named Jacques (presumably her sorcerer) for help before calling for her brother, I'm going to guess that her sorcerer is one of the normal ones.
