you have to look at it through the context of korean society. unfortunately its true that you will be alienated if you are considered good looking (as the bottom is) and not sociable. people will think you're a bitch and not talk to you, you WILL have weird rumours spread about you, esp in middle/high school
as for the mom, I assume she lives in America as they mentioned in the earlier chapters. why? we'll have to find out
for calling him "dad" at daycare, my guess is that they do that to prevent being bullied for not having a dad. again, korean context, kids who have divorced parents get bullied so you can imagine what happens to kids without a dad at all
