idk but to me it feels like BL plus.. you know those seinen webtoons that straddle the line between action and horror? like just enough weird stuff for it to be unsettling but mix in just enough violence and horniness to ground it back. so much absurd shit happens that you won't even bat an eye at the plot because you've accepted the absurdity and just take the entertainment.
those works often also have sudden smut/fanservice that seem out of place... i mean, that usually involved girls as side characters but i never considered how interesting it would be if it was the main character sprinkled with gay awakening.
it's so appropriate for the story AND perfectly embodies the hilarious chaos that shakespeare used it for. it must've been an insane feat to translate it like this along with conveying/substituting the korean puns
like i'm not saying it makes the plot good or unique in any way nor does it make the ML less shitty... it's still pretty meh and i'm 100% expecting the 'redemption' arc to be unsatisfying as hell. but amnesia arcs in BL are as old as time; there's always a pattern and it's the prologue for the groveling arc once MC recovers his memories 90% of the time. there's even several extremely obvious context clues that MC is starting to recall his memories.
despite that i see a lot of comments that gripe as if amnesiac bottom is endgame and they'll ride off into the sunset with this huge glaring plot point uncovered, the end. i can't tell if it's just really young readers or this is, idk, their first time reading BL manhua or encountering this trope in ANY book ever... but i worry for the declining reading comprehension and context analysis here.
Yeah but this amnesia plot is way different. In most amnesia tropes it’s just a bit of confusion, but the person is still mostly aware and themself. In this case Yan got amnesia and mentally regressed to a child, prompting ml to use the opportunity to rewrite history and raise/groom him into a relationship/marking/children even when he knows that’s not what the actual Yan wants. It’s very gross and really shows that ml was more focused on capitalizing on the injuries he caused than legitimately helping Yan recover.
If I had an abusive ex who caused me to be crippled and lose my memories (much less my mental capacity) and I woke up to find out they used it as a chance to trap my into marriage or kids I would be horrified and disgusted. It’s even worse in this universe because marking is permanent

this is pretty much his constant line of thinking after a series of traumatizing things happen:
-FL finds out/senses she will be leaving her current body
-she asks emperor to stay & spend this little bit of remaining time with her
-concubine suddenly asks for the emperor
-the emperor, torn between affection and a sense of duty/pity, chooses duty: he leaves empress to go to the concubine, promising he will be back immediately after seeing what the concubine needs (concubine just faked being sick)
-after he leaves, assassins appear, coinciding with the time the FL's soul leaves her current body
-emperor arrives to find kidnapped, and after chasing the kidnappers he arrives to her bleeding and holds her in his arms till she passed. he's stricken with guilt, further worsened by the fact that the FL had asked him to stay in (what he thinks is) her last moments.
-during this, the FL returns to her original body for two years
-in this time, the emperor becomes sort of unhinged and desolate after her death, both refusing to take any other empress to replace her and disallowing anyone to change/touch anything in the empress palace. his rule becomes tyrannical.
until more time passes and he sees a male guard visit the palace who reminds him so much of the empress. (weird translations on pronouns here so i couldn't tell if it was FL in disguise or her soul got transmigrated again to a different body when she decided to return to the emperor to protect him from an assassination attempt)
she end up being the emperor's body guard. the emperor begins to pursue him/her relentlessly and unlike before is very quick to confess he has unrequited feelings for her (in front of the whole court no less) and immediately begs/apologizes if he thinks he offended her.
