From what I can take, the king might accuse the Lombardi of refusing the imperial family in favor of the Lumans. Burning the letter means burning evidence that they have any knowledge of Larane and Avinox’s relationship. So if they elope, the Lombardi can pretend they don’t know jackshit about it so the imperial family can’t take it against them.
