Where should she have been? She was told her child is dead. If I remember correctly, rotetshuu (her owner and the father of her lover) said he killed the child. She just discovered recently that it might still be alive. Who knows what she would have chosen if the child was by her side. As a mother I get her in that situation. I probably would also have fled a place, where one cannot even say goodbye to ones own child.

I don't read the novel, but probably some evil scheming that'll acknowledge her baby as the true heir of the dukedom? If the lawful wife is abandoned or some sort, she can make some scandal saying an "accident" happened and the child in her womb is the duke's. After all no one can prove whether it's true, especially when the duke's currently losing his human reasoning.
